Asian Privacy Scholars Network

The UNSW Law Faculty Cyberspace Law and Policy Centre's 'Asia-Pacific Privacy Charter' and 'Interpreting Privacy Principles' projects helped us over many years to build links with a network of scholars in the Asia Pacific Region.

In early 2010 these collaborative links helped create the Asian Privacy Scholars Network. The Network was formed by the 19 participants at the March 2010 Symposium  held at UNSW titled 'International perspectives on privacy regulation: Privacy Principles in Asia Pacific economies compared' - see the Programme of symposium. The UNSW event was therefore the inaugural meeting of the network.

The 2nd Asian Privacy Scholars Network Conference will be hosted by the Centre for Business Information Ethics (CBIE) , Meiji University, Tokyo, Japan, on 19-20 November 2012. Details and registration information are on the Conference web page.

The Asian Privacy Scholars Network aims to further the study of personal data protection, privacy, and surveillance in countries of the Asia-Pacific region, through conferences, publications and networking. It is predominantly comprised of academic scholars, but also includes some scholars from government, NGOs and business.

The common element between its members is that they publish work on data protection, privacy, and surveillance that is respected by their peers.

Membership of the Network is by invitation, approved by the current members. The Cyberspace Law and Policy Centre provides the secretariat to the Network.
